KEN SLEZAK

A few months ago Ken was diagnosed with a serious illness. We have been hoping and praying for his recovery. Unfortunately he lost his fight yesterday. As a clarinet player Ken has been one of the longest standing members of New Horizons. We are going to miss his quiet sense of humor. If you would like to send a card to his family, please send it to : Loretta Slezak, 3119 Grill Rd, New Franklin, OH 44216.

MARGARET “PEGGY” HUBMAN

Jim Adkins mentioned at our last rehearsal that he and Lynne had reluctantly placed his mother-in-law, Peggy Hubman, in to Hospice. He and Lynne have cared for her in their home for the last 10 years; she is now 97 years old. Once she became bed bound and the care became 24/7, it became evident that more help was needed.

At the moment, she is sleeping most of the time. Despite her dementia she still has her moments of lucidity. A couple days ago Lynne and one of her sisters were able to visit with their mom for a couple hours and she was fairly alert and oriented. They were able to reminisce and say their good-byes. This in itself was a blessing.

Jim wanted everyone to know that Peggy requested to have a small service with only family present. Flowers and donations are discouraged but our prayers are coveted.

Dear Lord: Be with Peggy as she makes a peaceful transition into Your arms. She has lived a long amazing life and has been blessed with the love of a wonderful family. Wrap Your arms around each member of the family and give them comfort, strength, rest, and peace. And bless them with wonderful memories.

Amen

Sue Berkey from the violin section has a spinet Wurlitzer piano that she would like to give away to a good home. It would be up to whoever takes it, to move it from her basement.

She also has a set of dishes with the China Pearl Josephine pattern. This would include service for 12 and accessories. She is asking for $100 for everything.

PRAYER REQUEST – JOYCE EVANS

Just wanted to let you all know that Joyce (saxophone is her instrument of choice) spent a couple days in the hospital getting her heart regulated to a normal rhythm. She’s home now and doing well but she won’t be at Sunday’s concert. As an FYI, she happened to mention that heat and dehydration are triggers for people with a-fib, so for those of us with issues, make sure you try to keep as cool as possible at this weekend’s concert, and have a water bottle handy.

If any of you would like to send Joyce a card and let her know you’re thinking of her, her address is: 1165 Falling Brook Circle, Louisville, OH. 44641.

Take care Joyce and come back soon!

Chuck Sandstrom

Many of you have probably noticed that Chuck has been MIA from the band. What’s been happening? Chuck loves playing his trombone for New Horizons. Well, apparently he has moved to Florida where his daughter is. I know he misses us terribly so it would be great if we could inundate him with cards. His new address is: 4571 Carmel Circle, Pace, FL. 32571. Even better than that, he told Jim that he would love phone calls. His phone number is (850)417-1749.

So whichever way you decide, Chuck would love to hear from you. The good news is that he has found a New Horizons near him. So things are looking up for Chuck!

Mary Jane “Janie” (Volk) Longfellow

Below is the obituary for Tim Longfellow’s mother who died on Independence Day. Tim is well known to New Horizons for his piano and keyboard accompaniment. If you would like to send a card of condolence to Tim and his family the address is:

3272 Cherrywood Street, Norton, OH. 44203. He said he would forward cards on to his dad too. Many of you know Jim. You often see him in the audience when the guys are playing at the Houston Pub. And some times he’ll even step in for the drummer.

Obituary

Mary Jane Longfellow (Volk), 83, recently of North Canton, formerly of New Franklin, Ohio, peacefully gained her independence from this world on July 4, 2021 at the Cleveland Clinic Justin T. Rogers Hospice Care Center, Fairlawn, Ohio, surrounded by her loving family.  Mary Jane, also known as Janie, was born January 16, 1938 in Massillon, Ohio to the late Nicholas and Mary Ann Volk (Juersivich). She had been a resident of Melody Village for 60 years.

Mary Jane received an associate degree from the University of Akron, and in 1997 retired from the Babcock & Wilcox Co, Barberton, after 30 years.  She loved music, crafting, cooking, and baking, especially with her family. She was an active member of the Norton Music Boosters in the ‘70’s and continued to support them to the present. Mary Jane crocheted blankets, booties and outfits for all the family’s weddings, and new babies; as well as for the babies in the neonatal unit at Akron Children’s Hospital. She made dozens of quilts for hospitalized veterans.  A legendary event was the Annual Christmas Cookie Bake, which included her famous ricotta ball cookies and nut roll cookies. Other favorite pastimes/adventures included golfing, bowling, camping, traveling, cards, and casinos with Jim, her best friend and husband of 62 years.  Mary Jane was a member of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church via St. George’s in Clinton; K.I.S.S. Quilt Guild (Keep It Simple SEWers) and the NEORQC-North East Ohio Regional Quilters Council. Family was her life, and her home was always open for visits and gatherings.

Mary Jane was a true survivor, overcoming four separate cancer battles, and numerous recent medical issues. We will always remember her resilience and deep-rooted faith that never failed her throughout her life.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by infant daughter, Suzanne Marie; sister, June Miller (Volk); brothers Howard Volk and Dale Volk.  Mary Jane is survived by her loving, devoted husband, Jim; sister, Joanne Wesley; children, Michael (Jennifer) Longfellow; and Timothy (Donna) Longfellow; grandchildren, Phoenix (Brandon) Cornwell; Allegra (Jonathon) McFadden; Christopher (Jeweli) Longfellow; Madison (Ryan) Peters; Gray Longfellow; 9 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Special thank you to Karla Schultz, CNP at Cleveland Clinic Akron General, and Hospice Nurses Leslie and Darlene for their outstanding compassion and care in Mary Jane’s last days; and to the staff at Sanctuary Grande in North Canton for their care and friendship since October 2020.

Friends may call at the Swigert Easterling Funeral Home, 624 E. Cherry St., (Rt.93) Canal Fulton on Tuesday, July 13, from 5 to 7 pm.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 14 at 10 am at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, 4022 Johnson Rd., Norton. Interment at Greenlawn Cemetery, 2580 Romig Road, Akron

To honor Mary Jane’s life, donations may be made in her name to the Norton Music Boosters, PO Box 1335, Norton, OH 44203.

Perfect Practice Makes Perfect

Submitted by: Janet Scarry – Flute

No more hustle and bustle since the lockdown has given me more free time to do a lot of things, including practicing. So, I decided to get out a book I used to practice in roughly three years ago. The book is by Marcel Moyse and it has excellent practice drills. One of the things I like about it is, the same drill will be in different time signatures. I highly recommend it.

Everyone be safe and stay healthy.

Garage Sale

I’m getting ready for a garage sale this weekend and I live about 3 blocks from the church we have rehearsals in. The address is 144 E. Ralston Ave, Akron, Ohio. If anyone is interested, just stop by after rehearsal tonight. I’m just leaving it there all night since it is not going to rain. So if you even want to steal stuff during the night I would not be offended at all. I just need to empty this house before we move.

A matter of fact, if there’s anything a NH member wants, I’ll just give it to you. It’s one of the perks to our group. Mi crappola es su crappola.

Found a Taker – Youth Drum Set

If anyone has a grandchild interested in learning the drums, I have a youth sized drum set that I acquired a couple years ago thinking one of my grandchildren would play. My guess is that its fits like a 5-12 year old. It is not in perfect condition but as a starter you might find it acceptable. I’m not even sure how to put it all together – perhaps Jim or Jaime could help you with that. I have a dumpster in my driveway until Tuesday so I’d appreciate it if you could let me know if you’re interested before then.

This is Marilyn Katzmark and my cell phone number is (330)612-5542 and my email address is katzohio@sbcglobal.net.
