A Message From Your Board

As band members each of us owns responsibility for our health and learning while Jim continues to stretch us through technology, live rehearsals and as many performances as we can manage. We are so fortunate to have New Horizons, Jim and Jaime bringing music and learning into our lives.

As a board our foremost concern is for the safety of our members and as CDC guidelines continue to evolve we are excited to start our transition back to ‘normal’.  As things are loosening up we are tempted to relax our practices but we are not there yet.

Please help by getting vaccinated if you can and each of us will do all we can to help keep everyone safe by continuing to wear masks, maintaining social distance, and following Responsible Restart Ohio guidelines

There still are many band members who are reluctant to return due to COVID concerns. So we must stay vigilant to help all our members feel safe in participating in our events as we need everyone to help create our big, beautiful sound.

Mary Ann Kimmel

It is with great sadness that we would like to inform you of the loss of one of our own, Mary Ann Kimmel. Both Mary Ann and her husband Jim have played in the violin section of New Horizons for years.

For those of you that would like to send cards, Jim and Mary Ann Kimmel’s address is:
861 Promenade Circle
Barberton, OH 44203

Please keep Jim in your thoughts and prayers as he goes through this difficult time.

Mary Ann Kimmel, 78, passed away on April 19, 2021 after a short battle with leukemia.

She was born June 12, 1942 in Barberton to Bernard and Louie Snider. She graduated from Norton High School in 1960, then from the University of Akron with her Bachelor’s Degree, and Kent State University with her Master’s Degree. Mary Ann loved to teach kindergarten in the Barberton School System and retired in 2001 after 38 years of service. She played the piano and violin and enjoyed being a part of the New Horizons Musical Group along with her husband. She enjoyed scrapbooking, sewing, and gardening. Mary Ann had a smile that would “light up a room” and was always taking care of other people’s needs.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, James; brother, Joseph (Sally) Snider of Ft. Wayne, IN; sisters, Ruth (Tom) Spradlin of Wadsworth, OH and Nancy (Elliott) Weber of Brownsville, OH; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Friends may call at Bacher Funeral Home, 3326 Manchester Rd., Akron on Monday, April 26, 2021 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with service beginning at 1 p.m. Interment at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Cancer Society, in memory of Mary Ann.

For the safety of the family and other guests, masks are required, and the number of people permitted in the building at a time will be limited. Your cooperation and patience are appreciated.

Zoom Recitals 2020

Our last public performance was the “Small Group Recital Night” on February 17, 2020 at the Akron Summit County Library.

To address COVID-19 restrictions, we had to quickly get up to speed using the Zoom Meetings app for our performances. In addition to the Zoom learning curve, other challenges included: Internet disruptions, audio distortions, power interruptions, and smartphone/computer peculiarities.

Our recitals showcase the progression of skill levels:

  • Orientation – A playing ability level during which a comfort zone is reached between the beginning student of music and their instrument, notation, practice commitment, rehearsal techniques and mental musical comprehension.
  • Novice – A playing ability level, beyond Orientation but not yet enjoyed by a consistent Intermediate player.
  • Solo Studio – This opportunity is the newest addition to our program. Due to the positive experience of our “First Zoom Recital” we have added a solo Performance opportunity.
